Centennial BOCES Reading Modules

  • Intended Audience: Content area teachers, classroom teachers, coaches, new teachers, and paraprofessionals.
  • After each Module section a PD certificate will become available for you for that section. Once Module 1 is complete Module 2 will become available to you (then Module 3 when Module 2 is complete and so on).

 

Reading Module 1: The Road to Literacy

Course Description: This course will begin to show the framework of these collection of literacy/READ Act trainings.  It will give an overview of the subject and will focus on what research tell us about reading, how to set the structure for student success and how the brain functions (and how to harness it) when learning and teaching literacy.  This course must be completed first before continuing on to the next Literacy Module.

This course includes:

Reading Module 2: Phonological Awareness

Course Description: This course will go into the first of the four foundational skills sessions.  This includes the stages of phonological and phonemic awareness development, learning how words can be blended and segmented, and how to identify and practice instructional activities that support he development of phonological awareness.

This course includes:

Reading Module 3: Early Literacy - Linking Speech to Print

Course Description: This course will discuss phonics, letter/word recognition.  This includes recognition of complete words and pieces of words to create connection between the written word and speech.  This course will also connect phonemic awareness and phonics through the understanding of speech to print, the association of sounds to letters and the steps to begin reading simple words.

This course includes:

Reading Module 4: Basic Phonics

Course Description: This course will expand on the understanding of basic/beginner phonics and matching phonological awareness instruction. 

This course includes:
